The focus for refugees after arriving in Sydney was usually to find work and a place to live, often close to hostels where many refugees stayed initially and contacts around Cabramatta and Fairfield. Many refugees and migrants had to cope with learning an unfamiliar language as well as dealing with grief and tension arising from sudden departures and separation from wider family networks.

Since 1975 they have taken the initiative in setting up support networks such as the Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA), language schools, media and numerous temples. Vietnamese Australians have contributed creatively to many areas of Australian life such as politics, cuisine, arts, and research.
