Inspired by nature
This colourful drawing shows a decorative array
of traditional knitted garments, worn in the
island region of Muhu in the 1850s. Costumes
varied from region to region, but all were rich in
design and colour and often inspired by nature.
Temperatures in Estonia can drop to a chilly
minus 40 degrees... so warmth through wool
is essential. Knitting was a national pastime.
Women often wore layers of thick socks, as thick
legs were considered indicators of strength
and the ability to carry loads... and children.
