Project description
Part of Bankstown’s Community Harmony Project, 10 Stories from Bankstown brought people of different generations and cultures together to share their experiences of migration and living in Australia.
Young people aged 14-22 years from the Bankstown area took part in workshops (facilitated by staff from the Centre for Cultural Research, UWS) which involved:
energetic discussion about areas of migration including settlement, racism and multiculturalism; and
developing skills in audio recording, interviewing, editing and fact checking.
Equipped with these skills, the young people approached and interviewed ten older people in the Bankstown area.
10 Stories tells the personal and family histories of ten very different Australians from places as diverse as Mauritius, Lebanon, China, Cyprus and the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The stories reflect on diverse life experiences, such as the passage to and within Australia and memories of childhood homes.
What did the project achieve?
People of different generations sharing experiences, thoughts and personal stories.
The community at large has gained a valuable resource and been enriched by learning about the cultural heritage and local history of Bankstown.
A selection of these edited interviews were published as a booklet in May 2002.
