Project description
‘Recycling – Another Way of Living’ was a two day event organised by the community group “The Voice of Arabic Women” to celebrate the achievements of Arabic women, their testimonies and their artworks. Held at the Parramatta Heritage Centre, the event included workshops and an exhibition.
“Not only do we recycle objects and materials every day, but also thoughts and beliefs throughout life.” The theme of the event reflects how migrants and women are constantly re-inventing — ‘recycling’ — themselves.
This theme was explored by artists Bouchra Beydoun, Nadine El-Saidy, Rose Alagha and Iman Samman at the exhibition. The workshops were conducted by four Arabic women who are artistic/cultural professionals: Marie Hannoun Khilla, Mishline Jammal, Jacy Kattan and Hend Saab. Writer/director Paula Abood spoke at the opening on the recycling of politics.
What did the project achieve?
A forum for a practical, hands-on, exploration of identity through performing and visual arts.
An opportunity for participants to explore, challenge and redefine values, traditions, politics and aspirations.
