Apron woven 1950s, Trebenista, Ohrid
Lent by Spasija Aleksoska
Spasija wove this apron in the 1950s and wore it as a young bride. Despite intense pressure to produce children as quickly as possible, women took pains to hide their pregnancy under their aprons, avoiding inquisitive eyes. Spasija who was very slim, wrapped towels under her apron, so she looked substantial but not pregnant.
